Use the built-in view for a quick first pass
In System Settings → General → Storage, the Documents category can surface large files and downloads. Finder search can also filter by file size. These are good ways to find a few obvious videos, archives, and installers.
Switch to a folder map when the total is still unexplained
A disk analyzer keeps directory context. Start at the largest top-level rectangle or row, move into it, and repeat until you reach a folder or file you recognize. This avoids guessing among hidden paths and thousands of similarly named items.
- Choose scopeScan the startup disk for the full picture or your home folder for a faster first pass.
- Check exclusionsProtected and cloud-managed locations should be visible when skipped, so a partial result cannot masquerade as a complete one.
- Follow the largest branchDrill down from the biggest folder before spending time on small entries.
- Verify in contextReveal the item in Finder and identify its application or project before moving it to Trash.
Watch for files whose headline size is misleading
Sparse virtual disks can report a very large apparent capacity while occupying fewer physical blocks. Hardlinks can make the same storage appear in multiple directory entries. Compare allocated and apparent size before deciding what will actually free space.
A deletion checklist
- Is the item yours, and do you understand what created it?
- Is it backed up or reproducible?
- Can the owning app remove it more safely?
- Will moving it to Trash be safer than permanent deletion?
- Did available capacity increase after Trash was emptied?
